Are you wondering how to cancel PayPal payments? Don’t worry: you are not alone and there is, in most of the scenarios, a quick solution.
PayPal is a widely used money management service that allows you one to pay and receive payments online with ease. You already know how to use PayPal and how to create a PayPal account, right? So, let’s dive into the tricky topic of canceling a Paypal payment.
Before going into the details of this guide and explaining how to cancel PayPal payments, I must make a necessary premise distinguishing automatic payments from completed payments.
In fact, you should know that if your intention is to cancel an automatic payment on PayPal, i.e. a recurring charge that allows you to pay subscriptions to activated services on your own initiative, the procedure you need to follow is simple and you can put it into practice independently.
If, on the other hand, you have purchased a product or service and made the payment with PayPal and the latter has been labeled “completed” but now you would like to request its cancellation following any problem, the procedure you need to put into practice it is completely different, and a little more complex.
In this case, you can try to contact the recipient of the payment and request the cancellation with a consequent full refund. Alternatively, you could take advantage of PayPal’s purchase protection and report your willingness to cancel payment directly to the customer service of the payment service.
Regardless of the procedure, you will put into practice, you must know that the request to cancel a completed PayPal payment is not immediate and may not be accepted by the recipient of the payment or by PayPal’s assistance. The outcome depends on many variables.
Cancel recurring PayPal payments
Learning how to cancel PayPal payments involves a fast and straightforward procedure. You can undo any active recurring payment from your PayPal account. This functionality, however, is not available using the PayPal app for Android and iOS devices, so you have to act as a PC. Alternatively, if you do not currently have a computer at your disposal, you can cancel an automatic payment from smartphones and tablets using the browser installed on the device (eg Chrome on Android and Safari on iOS) and by acting from the official website of the service.
To proceed, connected to the official PayPal site, click on the Login button located at the top right, enter the access data to your account in the Email or mobile number and Password fields and press the Login button.
Now, click on the gear wheel icon located at the top right to access your account settings and, on the newly opened page, select the Payments tab. Then press on the View item relating to the Manage your automatic payments option and affix the checkmark next to the Show active item, to view the automatic payments currently active on your PayPal account.
To cancel an automatic PayPal payment, select the service of your interest, by clicking on its name, press the Cancel button for the Status option and confirm your intention, by clicking on the Cancel automatic payments button.
If everything went well, in addition to receiving a confirmation email at the email address associated with your PayPal account, you will see on the screen the message You have canceled automatic payments to [service name]: then click on the Finish button to complete the operation and view the complete list of inactive automatic payments.
It will be useful to know that, once the automatic payment of service has been deactivated, in case of second thoughts, it is not possible to retrace your steps by enabling the recurring payment again. To restore automatic debit, you need to log in to the service in question and repeat the automatic payment activation procedure.
In case, instead of canceling a recurring PayPal payment, you simply like to change the payment method used for PayPal’s automatic payments, you will be happy to know that it is not necessary to cancel the charges and repeat the procedure for activating a certain service again: simply access the modification section of the payment method.
To proceed, access the Settings of your account, select the Payments tab, and choose the service of your interest among those visible under the Show active option. Now, find the Payment method section, press on the pencil icon, and, in the new open page, put a checkmark next to the payment method you intend to use for automatic payments. Then click on the Save button and you’re done.
Cancel completed PayPal payment
If you are wondering how to cancel a PayPal payment when it is already completed and you are the sender of the payment, the answer is yes as long as the recipient is available for cancellation.
To proceed from a computer, connected to the main PayPal page, click on the Login button at the top right, and access your account by entering your access data in the appropriate fields. Now, press on the History item in the main menu to view the list of completed payments and select the one of your interest.
In the new screen that appears, find the Recipient data section, write down the email address of the person to whom you have sent the payment and send an email in which you request to cancel the transfer of money.
If, on the other hand, you have already contacted the recipient of the payment without having any feedback, go back to the History section, select the payment to be canceled, locate the section Do you need help? and click on the Report a problem item. If you do not see this option, it means that you are no longer eligible for PayPal’s purchase protection or that to request payment canceling you must act on the platform on which you made the purchase (for example, eBay).
In the newly opened page, select one of the options available from I have not received a purchased item, I have received an item that does not conform to the description, I want to report an unauthorized operation by me and I have a charging problem and follow the procedure shown on the screen to report your problem. If your request is accepted, your payment will be canceled and you will receive a full refund within 30 days of your report.
